Recipes

You know, it's kinda sad that recipes aren't written down on a notecard anymore. I print most of the recipes I use off the internet and they are nicely typed and formatted to be easily read.

I read a magazine article the other day that said you should take all the old handwritten recipes and frame them for your kitchen - what a great idea! How creative and artistic.

I'm going to take all the recipes that I hold dear and write them out on paper. Or maybe parchment - fancy paper that will capture the artistic style of the recipe. This may be a niche that I could expand on!

As for all the old recipies from my mom and my grandmother... I need to put them in a book, frame them or do something to keep her handwritten instructions clear for many years to come!

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day is tomorrow. The weekend was great, but went to fast as usual. Tomorrow Dean and Marcy's boyfriend, Michael are golfing in the morning. Marcy is hanging out with me to cook our lunch - BBQ Baby Back Ribs!

I already made the dessert which looks AWESOME - Blackberry Cobbler

"My grandmother made this cobbler when I was a little girl I can still remember the fun we had first picking blackberries together in the hills. Blackberries are my favorite filling, but this cobbler can also be made with apples."

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup butter or margarine, divided
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups self-rising flour*
1/3 cup milk, room temperature
2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons sugar

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a 10-in. round or oval baking dish, melt 1/2 cup butter; set aside. In a saucepan, heat sugar and water until sugar melts; set aside. Place flour in a mixing bowl; cut in remaining butter until fine crumbs form. Add milk, stirring with a fork until dough leaves sides of bowl. Turn out onto a floured surface; knead three or four times. Roll out to an 11-in. x 9-in. rectangle 1/4 in. thick. Spread berries over dough; sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll up, jelly-roll style. Cut into 1/4-in. thick slices. Carefully lay slices in baking dish over butter. Pour sugar syrup around slices (syrup will be absorbed). Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes. Sprinkle sugar over top and bake 15 minutes more. Serve warm or cold. (*If self-rising flour is not available, use 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus 1/4 teaspoon salt and 2-1/4 teaspoons baking powder.)

Although I haven't tasted this dish yet, the presentation looks, and smells, wonderful! After my family get together tomorrow I'll let you know what everyone thinks.

BABY BACK RIBS

I have 3 racks of back ribs.
Each rack is cut in half and boiled in seasoned water for 45 minutes 90 minutes.
Once the ribs are done boiling I remove them to a platter and coat them with b-b-q sauce.
The sit for about 2 hours before they are put in a 350 oven for 1/2 hour.
YUM Tasty!

Today was also another bust ass day in the lawn care and landscape design area. Included was a trip to Home Depot to get 10 bags of mulch to inhance the front walkway. It looks great, but I was about 4 or 5 bags short. That's ok though, it still looks great!

Well, I'm excited about this gathering at the house tomorrow. For some reason my home ended up being the location of choice. We'll see how it goes!

Hi

Right now I am working at a small printing company in Southwest Florida. I’ll be completely honest and say it’s a poorly run shop. There are only about 7 of us working here including the owner. We manage to get jobs done but that is only because of the skills and experience of several people here.

My day consists of coming in at 8:30 and getting the tasks on my desk taken care of. This may take 2 hours. After that I’m pretty much done but I’m required to stay here until 5:00. This leaves me with a lot of free time. Unfortunately, I get very bored. This is one reason for the blog. It gives me something to do and a place to vent my frustrations.

Since I started working here in June I’ve noticed that the building in which we are located is discusting. There is mold growing in one of the back rooms and when it rains the water actually comes up and puddles in the bathrooms. Of course, then you cannot use the toilet or flush because the “stuff” in the toilet will come up in the other restroom. It’s a complete unsanitary mess. Yesterday I turned the AC down and the whole place kinda smelled like cheese.

The best story I’ve heard so far about this place is the time that our bookkeeper was having maggots drop from the ceiling to her desk. Our owner said that it was a dead rat in the ceiling and not to worry that the food source would be gone soon. WOW - That’s nuts.

Getting Along

It seems to me that the older I get the more difficulty I have getting along with certain people.

Maybe I just don't have the patience with some people anymore. For instance, my boss really wears on my nerves and I have trouble even being friendly to him. He is very condescending and I think he truly believes he's superior to everyone in our office. I am not the only one he treats like a 12 year old. He talks that way to others in the office as well, but I have trouble just letting it "roll off". To add insult to injury, there is another person in the office who refers to me as her "secretary". That has to be the most demeaning word in the workplace and I can't believe a woman in her early 30's would even use it. I think they have even changed "Secretary's Day" to "Administrative Assistant Day" on most calenders.

Dean keeps telling me that this job isn't forever. I know it's not forever, but it's a pain in the ass right now. I could go on and on about how I'd like to work for myself brokering printing and selling ad specialties, but I've had opportunities to make that happen and ended up hesitating. I constantly imagine myself doing this for a living and maybe someday I will.

Tropical Storm Fay

We were supposed to have a hurricane yesterday and it never came! At the very least we were going to have a strong tropical storm and that never even showed up.

Unfortunately, it took Dean and I two days to get our house ready for this impending storm which for 3 days prior was pointed directly at our neighborhood. We spent the entire day Sunday putting up shutters and Monday night we picked up the loose items in the yard... flower pots, grills, hoses, pool supplies, decorations on our patio walls.

After all this preparation I was hoping we would at least get a thunderstorm. But no, not even a small rain shower. That is hard to believe, but I'm still waiting for the gusty winds and torrential downfall that they kept talking about.

The worst part for me was the anticipation for a day off of work yesterday (which 90% of Southwest Florida got). I did not get the day off. :(

I guess that's the price we pay to live in Florida. We absolutely love it here and wouldn't trade it for the world, but since 2004 every storm out there is a potential life threatening event according to the local media. I think they go to far with it myself. But, I guess it is better to be safe than sorry.

I am desperately trying to stay awake here at work today. There is NOTHING going on. The phone has rang about 6 times in the last 4 hours. Needless to say, I'm ready to get outta here. My head is starting to ache - probably because of the amount of mold in this building. My guess is that will never be taken care of.

My boss is in the back pretending to be a prepress technician right now. If he were an intelligent businessman, he would have me back there while he took care of RUNNING THE BUSINESS. He's quite a whimp though. He avoids clients and sales people. OMG... he just came in here and was talking about the most basic of desktop publishing issues and he has no clue what he's doing. I can't believe he runs a printing company. It's amazing that we ever get anything done.

It’s FINALLY Friday…

This has been a particularly long week. To start off, last week the boss was on vacation and his returning this week has made life a little tense around the office.

I have come to the conclusion that I work in the most discusting, poorly run place in town. I know this probably isn’t true, but right now it feels like it. My boss is a total loser. He tries to come off as this real intelligent guy by being condescending to everyone he talks to. It doesn’t take long to learn that he’s a fool who doesn’t have a clue about anything.

There is mold growing in the office and water coming up through the floor. I feel like I need to be disinfected after working in the office for a day. Here’s a photo of the floor I took this morning…
Nice huh?? There is so much water on the floor that a co-worker actually slid through it. Right now the floor is saturated, but when it's "drier", you can see where the black and white mold is "growing aound the spots.
Anyway, that is an example of what a dumbass my boss really is. Wouldn't a normal business person attempt to get this fixed?
He doesn't own the building so a call to the landlord would be my first step.
A couple weeks ago it rained so much that the toilets wouldn't flush and the "backup" (I could use more discriptive words here) was coming up through the drain on the floor.
One of the guys in the back said something about it and he actually held his head up, sniffed the air and said "ah, that's nature... fresh air... dirt"... What an idiot! That's fecal matter you dumbass. It has e-coli, bacteria and a host of other substances that we don't want to walk in, breath or be in the same room with.
Needless to say, that week I had to go to the gas station down the street to use the facilities. The bathroom at the gas station seemed clean and sanatary compared to the indoor outhouse that they call restrooms at our shop.
Oh, it's 11am and he just got to work. It's his usual time to report in. This is good for us workers, but looks bad when clients call and he's NEVER in until 11am. Of course, it's his business and he can do whatever he wants - it's just not the way I would run a business.
Now that I've had this opportunity to vent, I really need to act busy since he's lurking around every corner and will soon be here breathing his dragon breath on me. Maybe I should offer him a breath mint. Do you suppose he would accept it? Would he take the hint?
